Word 2007 template losing custom style definitions

D

Deni Sayani

I have set up custom bullet styles on my normal.dot(m) template.

I have not changed the styles on the bullet paragraphs, but the template
styles come up "changed"...not in the format and spacing I saved and also
with changed bullet characters; they appear to be reverting to the standard
Word bullet format.

Is anyone else having this issue? Any suggestions or workarounds?

thanks,
Deni Sayani

I suggest that you close all other Word documents, then open one blank window
and create uniquely named styles for your bullets and other styles that you
want to use all the time.

Save those styles as a Quick Style Set (click on the "American Airlines"
button [Home tab/Styles group/Change Styles command], hover on "Style Set,"
then scroll down to the bottom of the list of Quick Style sets and click on
"Save as Quick Style Set." In the Save Quick Style Set window that opens,
give the style set a unique name, then click Save).

Close and open Word, click on the AA button again, hover on "Style Set," and
select the Quick Style Set that you just saved. Then click on the AA button
one more time and click on "Save as Default." Now those bullet styles will be
in the default Normal template that you open when you first start up Word.

If you open any other document and want to insert your "default" Quick
Styles into the other document, just click on the AA button again and select
your bullet Quick Style Set. Your default bullet styles will be inserted into
the other document.

The style names are already unique (I do have a set), and they all seem to
"keep"...except for the bullet styles. (I have run into similar issues with
MS bullet styles in previous versions of Word...maybe it's unfixable.)

Although I see how your suggestion would work, I am setting up a template
that I want to work without any extra "overhead", i.e., the style set should
be automatically available and useable. These are not the kinds of procedures
my users are willing (or able) to go through to use a standard
template. Thanks for the info, though, I may try the Style Set for another
application.

Deni, my 150 users aren't willing to have to _choose_ a style set, either, so
in our office, we download our standard bulleted and numbered style set onto
each computer (yep, all 150 of 'em!) and then selected that style set to be
the default style set on each computer. So as each user opens a blank Word
window everyday, the styles we want them to use are already available in each
document. Takes a lot of guess work out of the equation...... ~:)

Out of curiosity, how do you do this? Do you replace users' Normal templates
(or modify them)?

I save the style sets to our network and then from any user's computer, I can
copy the style sets from the network into their Document and
Settings\[username]\Application Data\Microsoft\Quick Styles folder.

But as an extra added bonus, our IT guru wrote a program that we download
onto our user's computers where the program goes out to the network and
downloads those quick style sets automatically into each user's Quick Styles
folder, so as I modify the style sets or add new ones (some of our attorney
groups have created their own style sets and want everyone in the group to
have access to them), we can readily disperse the new and/or modified style
sets to each user simply by running that program. (Of course, you _can_ copy
them by hand and it doesn't take that much extra effort, but the program is
pretty cool because it does all this automatically.)
