Word 2007 Will not Print or Save

K

Kate

We are running Vista on a new computer. We configured two users. Everything
worked fine for a couple weeks. Then, I was working on a bunch of different
word documents when we had a power failure. Now, MS Word will not print or
save from my username. However, it does print and save from the other
username. Also, Excel and Powerpoint print and save from my username.

I have tried rebooting
I ran Office Diagonsitics
I have tried changing normal.dot to abnormal.dot
I have tried removing Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531)

Please help!

I'm running Vista and (for about a month now) I can't get Word 2007 to save
(either) changes to existing doc's or newly created doc's.
I can save as a PDF. Printing works fine.

I disabled my virus protection (kaspersky) and tried to print but it's the
same response. I read the fix below but it doesn't solve my issue.

I don't know if it's related but I can't get IE8 to work either. It will
open and show an address in the url box, but nothing loads on the page. Most
of the options on the drop down menus are grayed out/not available. And
while I can't say for certain I think both issues began simultaneously.

any advice?
thanks!

That may be a symptom of a Word Data Key corruption - usually because Word
has been running when updates are installed.

Run Regedit and expand by double-clicking to the key below. With DATA
selected, press DELETE. Word will automatically recreate a new key when it
is restarted.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

Symptoms of Data Key corruption may include:

• The mouse does not work when you use Word.
• You cannot open a Word document from the Search window in Windows
Vista.
• You cannot open a Word document from Windows Desktop Search.
• Word crashes when you try to start or exit Word.
• Word crashes when you open the Open dialog box.
• Word crashes when you save a document.
• Word crashes when you close a document.

If you feel uncomfortable editing the registry yourself, Microsoft have a
download that will do this for you. See MSKB 940791
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940791

Thanks for that. But it didn't solve the problem.

Actually, the only problem I see with Word is that the Save/Save As function
is lost. I never get a crash or mouse problem and printing works. When I
click Save, nothing happens. Occassionally I'll get a pop-up announcing that
Auto-Save is temporarily unavailable or not working. I can continue to work.
If I want to close Word it prompts me to save my work (yes/no/cancel).
Clicking Yes or Cancel gives the same response; the dialog box disappears.
Selecting No will expectedly close Word without saving.

Please test Word in Safe Mode. From Start | Run (Winkey+R), type in

winword /a

and press enter. Word will start in Safe Mode - effectively its default
install condition bypassing everything. Does Word work OK now?

Also, what Anti Virus are you using?

Yes. That worked.

Then I opened an old document and made a change and tried to save but got
the same error.

So opening/running in Safe Mode will work. Does this tell you what's wrong?
Is there a fix?

I'm running Kaspersky Internet Security 2010.

It may be the Office plug-in that is a Kaspersky option. You need to check
with the Kaspersky support site to disable that option or to see if they
have a fix for it.

However, starting in Safe Mode bypasses all add-ins and macros (and other
customisations), strongly suggesting a legacy add-in that is not compatible
with Word 2007. It would most likely be something that interrupts the built
in Save/SaveAs commands. Do you have any automated document management
system? But it definitely isn't a Word problem but some other third party
problem. So that's what you need to look at.

Thanks. If you get a solution (such as a downloadable patch or a registry
edit) please let us know.
