Word 2007 Won't Open Existing Docs or Save New Ones

Recent problem with Word 2007 ... will not open an existing document ... just
shows error, closes and then opens a new document. New document can be
generated, but cannot be saved. The rest of Office 2007 seems to be working
properly.

Could be a damaged Word 2007 data key in the Windows registry.
Close Word 2007, start regedit, and rename or delete the
"\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data"
key. Word will automatically create a new data key when you
restart it.

If that doesn't fix the problem, then try working through the
troubleshooting steps at

Dear garfield-n-odie [MVP],
I have just used your recommended Fix for this WinWord problem which I have
been trying to fix for ages. It worked so thanks very much for your useful
and correct advice.

Thanks again,
