Word 2007 won't start

Word 2007 (Office Pro Plus) won't start. Every other Office app works
perfectly. This all began after running Windows Update, including 3 Office
2007 updates - KB934390, KB934391, KB934395. When I try to run Word, I get
the splash screen for about 5 seconds, then nothing. A second attempt into
Safe Mode has identical results. A 3rd attempt prompts to start Detect and
Repair, which runs successfully but has no effect. Ran Microsoft Office
Diagnostics but it reported zero problems. Tried the instructions in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541 but all were unsuccessful. The Event
Viewer showed some "Rejected Safe Mode action : Microsoft Office Word."
errors with Event ID 2001, but there is no further info available on this
event.

I'm completely out of ideas short of a complete reinstall

I can't help you Steve but just to let you know I have the same problem on
two different computers the only difference is after I run detect and repair
and restart the computer I usually get the program back for a few days
(sometimes it takes a few detect and repairs) but after a couple of days it
will fail on the splash screen and I have to do it all over again.

Will Word start in safe mode? From the Run command, type in

winword /a

and press enter. Does it open now?

I hope I'm not violating protocall here but I have the same problem as Steve.
I also posted a Word 2007 won't start problem a week or so ago. After word
fails on the splash screen it prompts me to try Safe Mode on the next attempt
which I do but it fails again then on the next try it wants to detect and
repair which I allow and then if I restart my computer Word will usually work
but only for a few days and then the same thing is repeated. I tried the run
command after the lastest failure but it did no good. Icedently I have the
problem on two different computers both are running Vista.

Well, I was finally able to figure out why Word would not start for me. I
was having problems printing in other apps so I changed my default printer.
Tried Word, and it started just fine. Turns out something was wrong with the
driver for my default windows printer. As best I could tell, Word is the
only program I have on my computer that didn't start with the boinked printer
as default. Why should Word care that my default windows printer works
correctly when it starts? Who says I'm going to print during my session? If
I can rule out the couple of add-ins I use aren't causing the problem, I'm
submitting this as a bug.

Word has always been very sensitive to the printer driver because it uses
metrics from the driver to lay out the WYSIWYG page.

That makes sense. Still, Word shouldn't be so sensitive that it crashes with
zero indication to the user as to why. To me, it's still a bug.

Thank you for your time and insight,
Steve

Agreed. More recent versions (before Word 2007) actually gave some message
about the printer not being available.

Thanks so much for replying with your solution, it helped me when I really
was getting fed up! And all because my defaul printer was switched off!
Thanks again
