Hi folks! I'm trying to open a document and am getting the following error:

"The Office Open XML file Personnel Information Sheet cannot be opened
because there are problems with the contents."

Details: unspecified error

Location: Part: /word/document.xml, Line 2, Column: 4008

It's a Personnel Information sheet with various checkboxes and so on. I've
had no problems till today.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance!

Carmen

Never heard of it... how do I do that? I don't see any special Open function
or anything...

Thanks again!

In the Open dialog, click the arrow beside the Open button and choose Open
and Repair.

Sigh...open and repair (which I didn't know about... thanks for that!)
didn't work.

Any other ideas?
Worse comes to worse, I'll redo the work. I'm just trying to avoid doing
that...

There are ways to repair it: a developer familiar with XML would be able to
open it in an editor, scroll down to line 2 column 4008 and fix the error.
Sadly, that is not in my meager skill set.

I would be concerned if Word had written this file out and Word could not
then open it.

However, one of the nice things about the Word 2007 document format, IMO, is
that files can be fixed outside of Word, and, if it's not confidential, I
would be happy to take a look at your document.

Tony,
Have you discovered the cause of this yet?
We are having the exact same issue.
Worse yet, I have 3 users who have been publishing new documents regularly
and unable to open their own documents. Turns out they have been printing
them and editing them with pen & paper. DUH ! !
We have 3 months worth of files that can not be opened.
! HELP !

I know of no general cause for this. I have not received any files to look
at and have not checked further. If you send me a broken document, I will be
happy to investigate it.

After long hours searching solutions for this, i have finely got back
my work and just in time for submission.well my problem occur when
using Word 2007 so this is what i have done. :

1. Go to http://converter.tds.lv
2. Upload the docx document of yours and submit the form.
3. The result then will give you the ability to download varius file
format. click the .doc file and it will download the file.
4. Open the .doc in Word 2007.
5. In my case i have got all the format and text back (but i found few
text format missing/gone. Just a few though.). So it is better than
nothing right?

Well, if you're happy, I'm happy! Personally I'm wary of even clicking on
that link without knowing more about it, and it is hardly a viable ongoing
solution if you continue to hit the problem regularly.

If you are routinely getting corrupted documents, you should investigate the
cause. Word should not do this and I would be inclined to get Microsoft
involved if you cannot identify anything yourself. Interestingly you are the
second person this week, claiming routine corruption, that I have said this
to, so maybe there is a set of circumstances that does cause it.

Tony,

I have the same issue with a file where I get an XML error. I'm
willing to send you my file if you would like to look at it. I agree
with you that we need to investigate why it happened. Please let me
know if I can send you my file.

Regards,
Hilary

If you send me the file, I will happily take a look at it - no promises, but
I'll do my best.

Could you also tell me the history of the document - has it always been a
word 2007 format document (docx or docm), and only edited in Word?

I have seen, and recovered, the file; thank you for sending it. The cause
was a couple of, apparently rogue, XE entries inside the TOC. I can not
recreate the situation and can only assume some sort of corruption caused by
some unusual combination of circumstances; unless it happens, or can be made
to happen, again, I think it will have to be chalked up to bad luck.

Hi Tony,

I wonder if you can help me with my word-2007 file too. It says "Unspecified
error" row 2, col 339886 ... word/document.xml

how can i send you the file?

T

Tony Jollans

You should be able to see a reference to my e-mail somewhere (depending on
how you are accessing the newsgroups) but it is: my forename at my surname
dot com.

T

Thank you for the document, Hamid.

I am still investigating this as it is very similar to another broken
document I have seen, but I have managed to recover the document by deleting
the TOC, even though the error pointed somewhere completely different.
