We have a template that we must follow at work. I created a template and
placed in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033 folder. I
would like every new document from now on to open with the settings in this
document.

How can I do this? (The instructions online and within the help feature are
not good enough.)

Where is the normal.dot or normal.dotm or normal.dotx document?

Thank you for you help.

To affect the standard "all new documents", you must make changes in
Normal.dotm. Making another template just won't do it, no matter where you place
it.

The Normal.dotm template is stored in the folder identified as the User
Templates folder when you look in Office button > Word Options > Advanced > File
Locations. The default installation makes that a hidden folder at

%appdata%\Microsoft\Templates

which is in each user's profile, not in the Program Files subfolder you used.

Other than the details of the template's location, the page
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CustomizeNormalTemplate.htm explains
what you should (and should not) do.

If your modifications go beyond the recommended ones, it would be better to take
the template you already created and move it to each user's User Templates
folder. That will make it show up in the dialog they get by clicking Office
button > New > My templates. You can also record a macro of creating a new
document based on that template, store that macro in Normal.dotm, and add a
button to the Quick Access Toolbar to run the macro.
