Word 2008 and Snow Leopard: Opentype font issues

J

Johan

After installing Snow Leopard I'm suddenly experiencing OpenType font
issues in MS Word 2008.

1. Word 2008 character spacing becomes severely messed up when using
popular OpenType fonts (e.g., Adobe Garamond Pro, Minion Pro, Myriad
Pro). When typing text in one of these fonts everything seems fine.
However, upon quitting Word and reopening the document, its character
spacing becomes horrible: some characters cling together much too
tightly, while there is too much white between others.

2. Some OT fonts simply don't display. When I select Adobe Caslon for
instance and start typing, no letters appear.

3. There also seems to be a font list issue. Certain OT fonts don't
appear in Word's font menu, nor in the font list of the Formatting
Palette (e.g. Nexus).

Working in InDesign or Pages these problems don't come up. Is there a
bug in MS Word 2008 that prevents OT fonts functioning properly under
Snow Leopard?

It seems to be fairly common when upgrading to SL, but who's to blame hasn't
been determined. It should be easy enough to fix.

First, run the OS X utility called Font Book & use the two routines called
Validate Fonts & Resolve Duplicates. Also, go to:

User/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008

and delete the file called Office Font Cache (12).

Shut down the Mac & wait a minute or two before starting up. When you first
launch Word it will take a little longer than usual to start up, but the
issues you're witnessing should be corrected.
