Word 2008: Can't open .docx files!

Hello, this is an odd one that's affecting a few users of Word 2008,
today.
When double-clicking items in the Finder, they get a message telling
them that Word "can't open this type of file". The documents are on a
server (Win2003, mounted via ADmitMac) and have been edited
previously.
Mac OS X 10.5.6 is the host and Word is v12.1.2.
At no point have these documents been edited by Windows clients, or
with earlier versions of Word. And the phenomenon seems to be random.

A workaround has been to restart the Mac, log back onto the server,
then wait a few minutes before attempting to open the problem files
(the wait seems to make a difference, but no concrete proof of that).

Frustrating. And -yes- I know that Microsoft (like Adobe etc.) doesn't
support working off a server.

I'm not sure it's the *solution* but the install of Office is several
updates behind. The first thing I'd suggest is that you get Office updated
to 12.1.5, repair disk permissions & see if the problem continues. If it
does, post back with any additional details - perhaps someone with more
insight specific to your type of network configuration will have other
suggestions.

Hi Doug:

Are you SURE you need "AdmitMac"?

I have documents on a Win2K3 server at home, created in both Word 2008 and
Word 2007 (and in Word 2003 and Word 2004) and many other flavours as well.

I open and save them just fine over the network; even over the wireless
network.

The only difference is that I use SMB to connect direct to the Windows 2003
server without any special "helpers". It just works :)

Cheers
