Word 2008 can't open password protected .docx files

I can save a .docx file with password protection in Word 2008, but I can't then reopen it. When I try to do so, it wants to convert the file. Fortunately, I can open it with Word 2007 on the PC. Any thoughts?

I didn't have a problem here with a simple text document, using a
password of "test"--Word 2008 12.0, OS 10.4.11, PPC.

How did you add the password protection? Can you try on some simple
dummy documents, using a simple password, and see if the same problem
occurs? I'm wildly guessing that a complex doc may have corrupted and be
causing this, or that Word might be choking on a special character in
the password--see if you can eliminate those possibilities.

I've discovered the problem. The file I'm trying to open (it saved okay) is on a network drive (using SMB). I can open the file off of the network drive with a PC running Word 2007. I can't open it from my iMAC using Word 2008. If I copy the file to a local drive, I can open it fine with Word 2008. Apparently, there is some issue with SMB network drives and Word 2008.

Hi,

I think you can try a utility called Advanced Word Repair to repair
your Word document. It works rather well for my corrupt Word
documents. Its web address is http://www.datanumen.com/awr/

Hi Alan:

No, you can't!

In this issue, there is nothing wrong with the document. It's a bug in Word
2008.

Please don't allow your desire to gain a commission from selling PC software
to mislead users in this forum into paying $90.00 for software that won't
run on their computer!!

Cheers
