word 2008 clips online keywords

Whenever I download clips online (Firefox or Safari), the keywords/properties
are not saved and the clips get put in "favorites". It usually associates a
very generic keyword such as "downloaded clip" or "arts" which makes it just
about impossible to search. The only option I can think of is to open each
individual clip and retype the keywords and specify the categories. It's
obviously very time consuming. Is there an easier way to have Word maintain
the keywords and categories from the properties shown online?

Word 2008 for Mac 12.2.3
Safari 4.0.4
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5)
Gecko/20091102 Firefox/3.5.5

Hi,

Most of the clips will have only one or two additional categories in
addition to the default "Favorites" category when you download them. The
flip side is that the clips might come with too many selected
categories. About all I can do is confirm your observation. If you think
the clips ought to come with more pre-selected categories, when in Word
use the Help menu and use the send feedback option to let Microsoft know
your wishes.

Hi Jim;

I don't claim to have any accurate insight as to why it happens but all of
the keywords & other metadata are retained when you d/l the exact same clips
on a PC -- when you d/l to a Mac the metadata is missing. My thought is that
it has to do with the .cil cocoon the clips are wrapped in not being a
supported format by Mac OS. Perhaps the metadata is not really an integral
part of the clip itself, but is somehow encoded & attached to it. When the
..cil is expanded into the Clip Gallery on a Mac maybe that "piggybacked"
info can't be read so the only thing recognized is the clip graphic.

Thank you both for your comments. At least it isn't anything I was doing
wrong :)

Hi Bob,

When I open the download .cil files into Clip Gallery I do see
additional categories selected besides "Favorites" for most clips.

"Categories" isn't the issue, it's the Keywords [or lack of them] that the
OP was referring to. Clips which are associated with as many as 2 dozen
searchable keywords on the web site do not retain those keyword associations
when you d/l them to a Mac. The *are* retained if you d/l the same clips to
a PC. Here's one specific example but pick anything you prefer:

* the image is j0443740.jpg
* on the MS Office Online Clip Art site click the 'magnifier' for the image
to see the following array of keywords;
adults, Blues, casual clothing, cheerful, couples, enjoyment, friendships,
fun, gay man, happiness, homosexual, human age, humor, iStockphoto,
journeys, joy, laughing, love, mature adult, men, middle, mountains, norway,
people, Photographs, portraits, road trip, rocks, skies, smiling, sun,
tripping, vacations
* Download the clip & install it to the Clip Gallery
* Select the clip, click the Properties button & go to the Keywords tab to
view the extensive list of *one* keyword: jpg
* Repeat the above on a Windows box & *all* keywords will be there.
