word 2008 constantly crashes when editing document

I can reliably get word to crash every time I attempt to edit a
specific section in a document be it removing it, deleting it, adding
to it, changing formatting, etc. It's kind of annoying as the document
is about 300 pages long and the only way I've figured out of saving
all that work would be to create another document and carefully copy
paste as unformatted text each section from the original. Exporting to
older format/back to docx or editing it as rtf/etc. doesn't seem to
help.

Anybody got any thoughts on what to do next? I looked briefly on the
Microsoft web site but didn't really figure how to report this to them
although for every crash I do send the crashreporter data to MS
(assuming anyone ever looks at it ;-))

I finally figured out that I get two "free" support incidents per
product ID and how to open one with MSFT through the web. The bug
report field allows only 3500 characters in it so 90% of the crash
report did not get included. Hopefully the person responding "within
24 hours" will ask for more information and not simply resolve it ;-)

What you describe is classically symptomatic of corruption within the

Remove from the document the section break FOLLOWING the area where the
editing causes crashes.

Chances are, that will "resolve" your issue almost instantly!

Sadly, this is a "feature" of Word. It is possible to edit section breaks
in such a way that Word corrupts them and cannot write to them. Your
problem is the exact symptom that you get when this happens.

It can also be a corrupt paragraph mark.

Both paragraph marks and section breaks are property "containers". If their
insides get scrambled, Word can't read them. If it's bad enough, Word
crashes.

special as unformatted, apply styles & pictures to the document".
Thanks, though. Funny that MS does not have a way of checking the
sanity of word documents or cleanse them.

Sorry, but "Select All" won't do it - you're just copying the corruption as

Click on the paragraph button in the menubars at top of Document to
unhide all of the marks. now try to copy all but the very last paragraph
mark in the document.

Now copy to new open document and save under a slightly different name.

you know which on to leave because you see ¶ at the end of the last line
of your document. the below the lat line will be another. Do not copy
that one.

That indicates that the section break that is corrupted is the Master
Section Break, which is hidden following the last paragraph mark in the
document.

If you COPY all EXCEPT the very last paragraph mark, and simply "Paste" into
a fresh new document, that should resolve it. That re-creates the section
break in the target document.

If that DOESN'T cure the problem, then you are correct, it's one or more
corrupt paragraphs and you need to paste Unformatted.

But two weeks ago I had my laptop 17 to go belly up and took my iPhoto
and iTunes collection with it. Luckily I had backups for most and iTunes
conditionally allowed me a one time re download of my collection.

Still haven't go my laptop back. I'm almost hoping its Logic boar will
force me to get a new laptop.

Now trying to copy my Itunes library to iDisk on apple servers. slow
going as it use a WebDave system. I am reminded of 56K modems again.

Other than that I am making it I guess.

My g4-500 uses a DVD-ROM/CD-RAM drive so buring collection is out of the
question.
