Word 2008 crash/won't open with grammar check on

We have users on various Macs using Microsoft Word 2008 on OS 10.5.7. They
advise that Word will ‘crash’ when opening a document: when they attempt to
open they see the spinning color wheel which does not go away, Word ‘locks
up’ and they must force quit the program.
In our troubleshooting we have found that by turning off automatic Grammar
Check we were able to open documents. However, when we tried a manual
spell/grammar check then Word would freeze.
We believe the problem documents may have been previously saved in Word 2003
on Windows platform, by the user or a colleague.
We have tested on multiple versions of OS X and different hardware, e.g.
iMacs.
Does anyone know a fix for this? Thanks,

Solving this one can be a bit of a hunt.

First, make sure your OS and Office are both up to the very latest patch
level.

I believe that's OS 10.5.8 and Office 12.2.1.

Next we need to know the languages involved. Language is a property of text
in Word: it can be set by the style, or it can be applied directly to the
text, and it can vary word by word within the text.

You need to have a click aroiund in those documents and tell us which exact
languages are set in the documents. "English" is not close enough: there
are 29 English "languages", we need to know which ones are involved.

Word picks up its starting language from the Operating System on lanch, so
we need to know which language is set in the OS also (again:
"English" is not close enough.)

Depending on what you find, there are some bugs affecting Word's spelling
and grammar that cause this behaviour.

However, it may simply be a corrupt custom dictionary. The cure for that is
to copy it out to a plain text file, then paste it back in. This needs to
be done very carefully to ensure you do not include any formatting or
special characters that would cause Word to express the dictionary in the
wrong version of Unicode, because that can cause this problem.

Here's the procedure:

1) Open the Custom Dictionary from Word Preferences...

2) Create a TextEdit document and convert it to Plain Text (MUST be plain
text, or you will copy the problem)

3) Copy the content of the Word custom dictionary

4) Paste into the TextEdit plain text document and save it.

5) Delete the Word custom dictionary dictionary and then create a new one.

6) Paste the content back in from the Text Edit version, and save

7) Turn automatic spelling and grammar back on (they were automatically
disabled when you opened the dictionary)

8) Immediately quit Word and re-start.

If that was it, you're good to go now. If it's not fixed, see above under
"patches" and "languages".

Hope this helps
