word 2008 crashes on quit after pdf save

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I'm using word 2008 (12.2.3) and SL 10.6.2. After I save a doc/docx document in PDF, then quit word, it crashes with the message "word has quit unexpectedly." The problem occurs only when word exits--and after a PDF save either from the print or the "save as" menu.

How did you make the document?

What printer driver are you using?

Which PDF software are you using?

What other software is running?

This is going to be a chore to track down. It's a rare problem and we will
have to go looking for it.

Cheers

I would also try deleting the preferences, and either restart the program and/or restart the computer to see if that helps. It's kind of a hassle if you need to rebuild customized toolbars, but sometimes a necessary inconvenience.

Thank you for replying promptly to my inquiry. The documents are all made in word 2008, and for the most part saved in the docx format. My printer driver is HP laserjet 3390. The problem occurs not when I save in PDF from word, as others have reported, but when after saving to pdf I quit word. I had this problem of word crashing almost after every exit as soon as I upgraded to SL 10.6.2, but disabling endnote reduced exit-crashing to the aftermath of a pdf save. I'm not using any pdf software besides the one provided by Apple in SL, and this problem does not occur with other applications--e.g. firefox or pages. I usually have entourage running in the background to check my imap account.

The error log indicates the following:

In addition to running Repair Permissions.....

Download the Snow Leopard combo 10.6.2 and apply it OVER your current
install. A combo will go back and refresh all files.

Mac OS X v10.6.2 Update (Combo)

or

Next, remove the older Microsoft fonts that conflict with the newer version
in Snow Leopard.

caches)

You also might consider deleting all cache files using a third party
application like Onyx.

Let me know if this helps.

Right: The mention of EndNote sounds diagnostic to me.

There is a note on the EndNote website to the effect that if you run Cite
While You Write, Word will crash on exit. EndNote's suggestion is to "let
it", it does no harm. And they have no way to cure it.

Hope this helps

I have the same issue. I don't think it is Endnote (or if it is, it's not JUST endnote), as I had it before Snow Leopard, and there were no issues prior.

Office Word 2008 crashes WHEN I QUIT, but only after I have printed something. I am printing with an HP Color Laser Jet 5550dn.

You're exactly right. It's a general print problem--and not limited to print-pdf. Word 2008 crashes when I quit either after printing on my laserjet 3390 or after print-saving to pdf. I didn't have that problem before snow leopard.

I have figured out the issue with a bit of aid from posts here.

It is definitely EndNote.

If you have enabled CWYW, you will have a CWYW Word 2008.bundle in Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Startup/Word/. THis gets loaded overtime you open word.

While these tools are loaded, if you print and then quit, Word will crash on exit. I've tried this and I'm pretty sure this is the case.

A couple things you can do - if you ever print you can disable the tools in Word -> Tools -> Templates and Add-ins before exiting.

Or do what I do and remove the bundles from Startup/Word altogether. I use Word more than EndNote, and if I ever need it back, you can download the bundle again from EndNote, or copy the bundle from the EndNote Application (under CWYW folder) back into the word startup.

So in my case, it was definitely the EndNote bundle. Obviously Snow Leopard plays a part, as it didn't happen on Leopard (maybe SL changed the way printing is called), and I'm sure Microsoft could do something to make it not crash as well, but in the end I think it's the makers of Endnotes responsibility to fix, and since they are two versions down from what I have, they probably won't be fixing it anytime soon. I'm not sure if later versions of Endnote have the issue.

You're definitely right about endnote. After deleting the endnote file from word startup, I conducted several print tests: print-laserjet and print-pdf, and now word does not crash on quit. Thank you for your help.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for this thread! I have spent months trying to work out why this
problem occurred, and it only occurred when a printer driver was associated
to a document (.doc or .docx)

I deleted the EndNote bundle (as I don't even use EndNote) from the startup
folder in the relevant Word folders, and the crash is gone!

A question... Can EndNote be removed entirely? or will this affect Word 2008?

You can remove EndNote entirely, that will have no effect on Word.

But you won't be able to use EndNote :)

Cheers
