Word 2008 crashes, repeatedly

D

drfletcher

So far, I am quite disappointed with Office 2008. Word and Excel crash repeatedly. The program acts like a beta.

Running on a MacBook Pro, 2gig ram, 30 gig free space on the disk. Open up docx files, such as a 20 pape paper with one graphic in it, and the program crashes. Ran Disk-Utility to ensure that the disk and permissions were good. Ran Font-Book to make sure that no duplicate fonts were present. Trashed the preferences file to ensure that no old prefs from Office 2004 were causing problems.

Have opened other files on a similarly configured MacBook Pro and they also crash. Copying charts from Excel to Word also cause the program to crash.

See the crash log below. In this crash log, the program had be running for 4 hours. In another crash log, the program had been running 11 seconds.

Did you have *any* prior version of Office (including the 2004 Test Drive)
installed before installing 2008? Was this an upgrade or full install? How
did you go about the installation? Where did the .docx come from - 2007 on a
PC? What else can you tell us?

There is a problem with pasting charts from Excel - MS is aware of the issue
& is working on a fix. In the meantime you might try copying the *data*,
then using the Insert> Chart feature in Word to recreate the chart there...
A PITA, I know, but it's the only workaround I can suggest until the OLE fix
comes down:)

In addition to what Bob said, see if you have this file on your machine:

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10)

If so, rename or trash it. MSFT has discovered that if a custom toolbar
was created in Word X, then data was written to Word X prefs that causes
a crash. If you never had Word X installed, then it¹s another issue, of
course.

Hmmm... Sorry to hear you are having a rough time.

That specific crash was caused by a corrupt Chart object in the document.

Word 2008 is, generally, a lot more stable than Word 2004. However, it does
have a few bugs in it that will allow some documents to bring it down.

The only new information I can give you is that this 'particular' crash was
caused by the DOCUMENT itself, and you will need to de-corrupt it.

To begin with, I suggest that you make a copy and delete the chart from it.
Save it as a .docx, which will clean it up.

The see if you can re-insert the chart without further trouble.

Hope this helps

I also have been getting random crashes on a Mac G5 dual processor 233gHz, 2 GM RAM. I did not remove Office 2004 (Teacher/Student). The program (Word 12) crashes all the time. Opening menus, doing normal word documents. Nothing really fancy. I have Suitcase installed and the new word fonts appear along with my other fonts in the word font menu. The crashes are so random I can't pin them down to a single process. Also everytime I quit the program I get an "Unexpected Quit" dialogue box asking to report the crash. Can anyone help?

My new Word 2008 is also crashing constantly on opening documents. It even crashes when I close the program. This is a horror!

RE: My previous cry for help (see above)

I got my crashing problem solved. I called in one of my two tech help freebies. Very helpful and the problem was solved. Apparently the preferences got corrupted during installation. I did not remove my old (Mac 2004) Student Teacher Office program. Trashing the word preference folder and the word 12.0 preference (plst) files and restarting did the trick.

I don't think it could be looking for those FONTS because on my father's MacBook it opens right up with little issue and I didn't install those FONTS on his computer either... Something is hanging HARD on startup!

Hi Ryan:

There are several different issues that can cause Word 2008 to misbehave on
startup.

I don't have enough information to enable me to say which one you have.

I need to know what type of CPU you have, which version of Mac OS X you are
using, which version of Office you are using, and which updates (if any) you
have applied.

Cheers

Hi Ryan -

Perhaps the newsgroup interface is contributing to the circumstances, but
you have your issue fragmented into at least 3 different threads. Granted
they all revolve around a similar subject, but having your replies scattered
about makes it impossible for us or *you* to focus effectively on *your*
problem - i.e. John has just asked you for info you have already provided in
a different thread and to which the same suggestions are being offered for a
second or third time, and you yourself replied in this thread to a
suggestion offered in another thread :) Confusion ensues.

Some suggestions for future reference:

1- Always post your issue as a new message - even if you *think* it's
identical to an issue someone else has posted elsewhere.

2- Certainly monitor the other postings - researching the content already
posted is commendable - & if there appears to be a solution that will fit
your scenario give it a shot, but

3- Reply within your own thread & indicate whether what you have tried was
successful or what the results were.

For what it's worth (and hopefully to help others with the same problem), I was able to solve my case of Word crashing repeatedly by saving the offending document (created a few years ago with Word 2002 for Windows) as a .docx document, quitting Word, relaunching Word, and opening the new .docx document.

I am running a MacBook Pro Core Duo 2.2 Ghz with 3 mb of RAM.

I too have had the problem of repeated crashes with Word 2008. I have tried everything recommended here and in the other threads. None of the solutions offered have worked. Finally, I have solved the problem: I reinstalled Word 2004.

I've found that I am able to run Word 2004 as well as the rest of the Office 2008 suite -- PowerPoint, Excel, and Entourage. So far, no problems doing this. And, oh the joy of not having my word processor crash every ten minutes.

I plan to ignore Word 2008 until Microsoft issues an update. As it is now, Word 2008 is very unstable; it is unsuitable for professionals (in my case, a college professor) who depend daily upon their word processing software.

Go back to Word 2004 is my advice. Forget Word 2008 for now.
