Word 2008 does NOT WORK

F

Franco

I installed Office 2008 on Mini Duo Intel running MacOSX (v 10.5.1 Italian). All Office08 programs seem to work fine with the EXCEPTION of Word.

When Word opens a window it immediately crashes (i.e. no need to write, resize window or else...) and it requests to send an error report to Msoft. The error report is:

Microsoft Error Reporting log version: 2.0

Error Signature:
  Exception: EXC_BAD_ACCESS

  Extra app info: Reg=en Loc=0x0409

I installed Office 2008 replacing previous version of Office 2004.

I went so far through the following actions (as read in blogs) but none would fix the situation:
- run Office04 remove program again to nesure everything was removed
- deleted all com.microsoft.xx.plist files in user/library/preferences folder as well as
the Office 2008 folder in same location
- created new account to create fresh normal.dotm file: Word08 crashes immediately in new account as well (btw: spotlight search does not find/list normal.dotm file in search results while the file IS ACTUALLY THERE in user/library/application support/microsoft/office/user templates folder...)
- resolved all fonts duplicate cases

Surprisingly I have not been able to register my copy online (MSoft site does not recognize the Prod ID code).

Is anybody able to give me further indications how to fix my problem?

Thanks in advance
Franco

Hi Franco -

Did you have Office X prior to 2004? If so this may help:

Remove or rename ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10)

The registration issue is neither your fault nor significant:) The web site
is having problems right now, but registration really does nothing with
regard to the usability of the software. It just gives you the opportunity
to sign up for the monthly newsletter... Which you can do at any time.

Hi Bob
thanks for answering

Actually I dont have any file named Word settings in ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/ (I just have a folder named Office2008).

I have been working on the issue the whole afternoon and it seems now Word is stable (crossing fingers). I just removed World08 application and made a new "ad hoc" installation for Officie 08 ONLY for Word. I hope I have now fixed my problem... let' see...

Thanks

I installed Office 2008 on a Mac Mini PowerPC G4, 1.42GHz, running MacOS 10.4.11. I have the same problem that all the Office 08 programs seem to work fine but Word crashes every time I exit Word and sometimes when Im working on a document.

Ive also noticed that my trash is not working. When I add something to the trash, I cannot see it and when I empty the trash the icon shows that something is still in it.

Hi,

I have a similar problem. I get this error:
- while opening a document in Italian (with Office in English) on a
iMac G5
- while opening Word on a PowerBook Pro (just opening it)

I tried to clean everything (in ~/Library and in my ~/Documents
folder) with no luck (I tried since some users reported Word working
with a new account).

Any hint?

Matteo

Sorry, I did not want to hijack but the error message is the same,
maybe the reasons are different but the problem is the same (as far as
I can see). I just wanted to see if there was something common to the
threads where I posted.

An I have two problems and therefore the posts in different threads:
* iMac G5: Word crashes (always) when opening
* MacBook Pro: chrashes while spelling in Italian
But the error in the problem report is the same: and this makes me
think they could be related.

Hi Franco,
Sorry for the trouble. The issue is with spelling and grammar checking in
Italian. We are aware of this and are working to fix it.

To work around the problem, try this:
1. Quit Word
2. Go to Sysstem>Preferences | International and change your input local to
US English
3. Launch Word
4. Go to Word>Preferences | Spelling and Grammar and disable both
5. Return your input local to Italian

Let me know if this does not remedy the problem for you.

Thanks,

Curt

Hi Curt
thanks for answering. As I posted on Jan 27th it seems I manage to fix the problem running an ad hoc installation of Word. It seems the application is working while grammar- spelling functions are still selected.

That's good to know. At least the problem has been singled out.
Thanks for the feedback to the NG, Curt

Hi Matteo:

You have two completely different problems.

Any crash on startup, currently is either Template, Preferences, or Fonts.
Very few are fonts.

Any crash wile spelling in languages OTHER than English US is the bug Curt
is talking about, and will respond to the work-around he gave.

When we're working in here, we need very exact descriptions, because Word
does not have many error messages that are truly useful.

However, what is frustrating the HELL out of us, is that some people
(certainly you are not the only one doing this!!! {grin} ) are injecting
DIFFERENT problems into threads that are concentrating on one specific
problem.

This confuses the hell out of everyone, and can lead to other users losing
text. Some of the fixes we talk about in here are extremely destructive if
you apply them to the wrong problem.

A new user reading this thread might assume that have one problem, and go on
a wild goose chase, wasting a lot of their time and damaging their system,
by applying suggested solutions for the wrong problem.

They can then end up in a very serious problem, because their system has now
been irreparably damaged, and is in such a bad state that it becomes
impossible to actually diagnose the problem. And they now have "several"
problems, some much worse than the one they began with. Sometimes, all we
can say is "Wipe your hard disk and start again". Of course, at that stage,
we discover they have no backup...

So please, don't muddle threads: it could cost some unfortunate other person
a lifetime's worth of data!

Cheers

no, I do not think so. If you have an Italian keyboard, like me on my
PB, Word crashes on start because it loads the IT spellchecker by
default (I think).

Yeah, I phrased that badly :)

To me, yours is a "Crash immediately AFTER startup" :) And to me, it's a
"Bug" that can be worked around by adjusting a preference to disable the
function until they get it fixed.

In your case, Word doesn't actually crash until it has completed startup,
because that's when it loads the spelling preferences. And if the
preference calls for Italian, and Check Spelling as You Type is enabled,
Word will indeed crash.

But at that point, Word has actually started successfully, it's just when it
attempts to "run" that it falls over.

Splitting hairs: I phrased it badly.

Curt's work-around keeps it alive long enough to correct the preferences,
after which, you will not trigger the bug.

But his cure is of no use to someone who is getting a crash "during" startup
because of cruft in their Normal template :)

Cheers
