Word 2008 "File Error" when quitting

I am having trouble with a computer that gives me an error every time I close
Word 2008. The error says:

"A file error occurred. Check your network connections or make sure the disk
is properly inserted and not defective. (Normal.dotm)"

This computer is an Intel iMac, and is running Leopard (10.5.2). I'm pretty
sure this has something to do with the permissions not being set right on the
folder that the Normal.dotm file should be in, and I have tried to set the
permissions right based on this article
http://www.officeformac.com/blog/Security-issue-in-Mac-Office-2008-Installer
but that still doesn't fix the problem. Does anyone have any ideas of how to
fix this?

I just installed the Office 2008 12.0.1 update and it seems that it did not
correct this problem. Does anyone have any idea what to do?

Hi Phillip:

This one was supposed to be fixed by the update.

Have you rebooted since putting in the update?

Cheers

Yes, I restarted, and the problem was still there. I tried to reinstall the
update, but it couldn't find office, and remove office could not find Office
2008 to delete it, so I manually went in and deleted office and all
application support/preference files, and reinstalled office plus the update
and the error still pops up. It's getting really annoying.

Yes, it is annoying.

This is often either bad disk permissions or a bad Normal template.

First, use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions on your boot drive.

If that doesn't fix it, do this:

1) Quit all Microsoft applications.

2) Track down all instances of pre-2008 Normal template on your computer,
and drag them to your desktop. The file is called simply "Normal" and has
no extension.

3) Find and drag the file Normal.dotm to your desktop. Unless you have
moved it, it should be in
/Users/ ~ /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/

4) If the following files exist, Remove or rename them:

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (10)

~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Word Settings (11)

User/Library/Preferences/com.Microsoft.Word.plist

User/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008 (the whole folder!)

5) Now re-start Word 2008 and it should be OK.

Be thorough with this, if you leave any of these files behind Word 2008 will
find them and won't replace them. Do it right and Word will construct a
new, clean, set of preferences and everything should now work.

Hope this helps

This doesn't fix the problem for me.
I am using user accounts with Mac OS X server. The User's director is a
mounted AFP share.
Office 2008 seems to have problems with this. I don't think they support
this configuration.

Anyone any ideas???

They do support the configuration, but there are some nasty bugs when
attaching network home directories.

Hopefully, the fix for these bugs will be in the Service Pack that is just
about to be released.

Cheers
