Word 2008 for Mac

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

My Microsoft Word for my Mac is only saving my documents in Word 6.0/95 compatibility. I've gone to the preferences window and the compatibility is already set to Word 2000-2004 and X but when I save the document there is a compatibility issue. I'm trying to have my documents compatible with 97-2008 but the compatibility check shows up saying that Word 6.0/95 compatibility options are set. What do I do? I tried reinstalling Microsoft Office and that didn't work.

Saving to Word 2000-2004 and X *IS* the compatibility issue :)

The old .doc format files can not contain some of the new things that Word
2008 can create. You are being warned that if you save in that format, you
will lose some of the new functions and formatting.

When you change your default format to "Word Document (.docx)" the warning
will go away.

And on a Macintosh, re-installing should be avoided. The files that get
damaged are not part of the software installation, they are not on the CD to
be re-installed. But if you reinstall, you need to remember to re-apply all
of the updates to the product, otherwise you will make your problems worse.

Cheers
