Hi Rudy:
If he did not "Save" the file, then he has not changed the formatting at
all. He has only "displayed" the document without any formatting.
So:
1) Open the file using File>Open from within Word (either PC or Mac).
2) Select the file.
3) Change the "Enable" or "Type" box to "Microsoft Word" and click OK.
This time, Word will read the file "with" the formatting.
If he DID save the file, then look for the backup file, which will be saved
as "Backup of..." in the same folder as the trashed version. If it is not
there, then you need to go back to the original on your computer at home.
If there is no backup file, go into your Word preferences and turn on
"Always make backup" on the Save tab. With that on, Word will write the
current version of the file to the backup every time you save. So you
always have a second chance to protect you from idiots like this
Since the guy in charge of the printer is too stupid to install the free
converter that would enable his back-dated copy of Word to open or save Word
2008 files, I guess you better do a "Save As" while you are in there, and
save the file back as an old Word 2003/4 version.
Note: Saving back will convert things like equations to static pictures you
can no longer edit.
Now, I guess that along with your eduction, the school has just handed you
two really important lessons that will stand you in good stead for the rest
of your life
1) Never take the 'original' of a file (paper or computer) anywhere.
Always take a copy.
2) With computer files, you never lose only 'a part of the file'. You can
either read it all, or you have lost the lot.
Always have a backup. It is the responsibility of those of us who use
computers to MAKE this happen, every time. If you can do this, every time,
no exceptions -- you will have a much more successful career than I did
Hope this helps
Hello everybody.
I worked on this nice essay for a week, I went to school to print it on a Mac
with an older version of Word (I think 2003/4) and before I could say stop,
the guy in charge of the printer clicked the "Recover Text from Any File" when
the convert file pop-up window came up and basically changed the format of my
document making it unusable.
Is there any way I can reverse the process or at least recover just the text?
I tried a lot of options, but none seemed to work.
Please Please
Please this is very important,
All the Best, Rudy
