Word 2008, Mac OS 10.5.2 and Clip Art Gallery import

R

Rory Cooney

greetings.

Clip Art gallery crashes every time I use it in Office for Mac 2008. It
launches properly from the INSERT - PICTURE - CLIPART menu, i can click
"ONLINE" and get Safari to launch, and i can search and download the .cil
"cocoon" files. but as soon as I double-click the ".cil" file on my desktop,
I get a message that "Microsoft Clip Gallery has encountered a problem and
needs to close." This happens every time i try to bring in any downloaded
cocoon files from the Microsoft site.

This is a new phenomenon, i've never had a problem in any previous
incarnation of Office, and I've used it for about as long as it's been out.
Please help if you can.

Hi Rory,

I have no idea if this will help but try trashing your Clip Gallery
Preferences:

Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Clip Gallery Preferences
Home/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.ClipGallery.plist

(If you only have one of those files, don't worry about it. I have both
Word 2004 & 2008 on this machine and one of those probably belongs to 2004.)

Also, maybe you need to drag the .cil file into the Clip Gallery folder
before it will open? Worth a try.

Another thing to try: Repair disk permissions (Applications/Utilities/Disk
Utility)

In addition to Beth's comments, the 12.0.1 Office update supposedly
addresses ClipArt Gallery problems but I don't know if that's included -
haven't looked closely or checked it out. Have you applied the update?

Thanks to both Beth and you . Yes, I installed the update, and also
trashed the pref files Beth was talking about, but I still am not
getting any cooperation from the program in importing or click-adding
the .cil files from the MS website. Sometimes, just "nothing" happens,
no import and no crash, but usually Clip Gallery crashes, launching
error reporter, which generates another error that CG has to be
launched from within word etc etc.

I still haven't done the permissions repair route - if I can do that
today I will and report back. thanks. Rory

HI all,

I have just discovered all the same stuff as you. I can download the
clip art using the Clip art finder etc, but when I come to try and
load it i get the message that this clip art if not compatible with
this program, In addition to this I have tried to use the included
pictures in formatting bullets provided with Office 2008 and it tells
me that this type of image in NOT compatible with this program!!!

Now having looked on the Microsoft Clip art website I discover that
under the Mac programs supported Office 2008, Word 2008 and PowerPoint
2008 do NOT occur, the latest version of Mac office is 2004, even
though the latest version of Office (for PC) is 2007.

I need a work round, or the new all singing all dancing version of
Office is becoming less useable and useful than 2004.

Does anyone at Microsoft have any ideas what is going on? DOe anyone
at Mactopia have any ideas to help?

Steve

How are you trying to "load it"?

Once you d/l the .cil navigate to it in a Finder window & dbl-click it. The
image(s) within it should load load the images to your Favorites in the
Gallery then you can access them through it. If you're trying to unzip or
unstuff or open it with some other approach than MS Clip Gallery 12.0.0 it
would explain the message.

I'm running Office 12.0.1 in Tiger 10.4.11 on a G5 here with no problem. If
it isn't working that way for you please furnish specific about your system
& software specs as well as exactly how you're attempting to access the .cil
file... And don't worry about 2008 not being listed on the web site - keep
in mind that it's maintained by the Windows minions, most of whom don't even
know that MS *has* a MacBU let alone what the latest version for Mac is:)

How are you trying to "load it"?

Steve, I'm doing exactly what I've always done, just as you describe.
After double-clicking the .cil file, there are no new pictures in the
"favorites" tab, or anywhere else, in MS Clip Art 12.0.0.

I have a G4 Dual 1.25 gh (mirrored drive door) with 1.5 gb RAM, and am
using MS Office 12.0.1.

Hi Rory -

Have you tried Control-clicking the .cil then Open With Microsoft Clip
Gallery? Make sure it's looking for MS Clip Gallery 12.0.0 rather than a
prior version. You may have to reset .cil Open With properties in Get Info.

Hi all

Thanks for the info bob, but like Rory I just can't download any
Microsoft clip art, and as I have lost (Somewhere) all the stuff I did
have with my Office 2004 I am getting a bit sad. :-((
I am running Office 12.0.1, on Leopard MacOS 10.5.2 on a dual G5
machine.
As always I find the Clipart I need on the Microsoft website through
Insert Clipart - Online... then download the file, double click and
then I get an error, if I try and open the .cil file twice the Clipart
program quits, sends me a window asking if I want to report the
problem etc, then of course I can't restart clipart as it can only be
started from inside Office.

Two big questions - where is my clipart from before? and if I find it
can I use it? - i still have the OfficeX disc and have tried importing
from that but no use 'cause it tells me that this type of file is not
recognized by 2008! now that's nice.

I have tried Control; clicking as suggested and still no joy, I am
using ClipGallery 12.0.0

Interestingly I noticed that the error message always comes up with
Failed to open XXXXXXX.wmf where as the file in my clipart gallery is
XXXXpng - Has this any bearing?

I am struggling now,
Any advice?

I am encountring the same problem! i Just bought Office 2008 and am
not able to use any of the online clip art! Whats the deal?

When i download the clipart from the website, it saves as a file named
clipart in my downloads folder. Opening this file launches clip art
gallery, but it gives an error message saying that it can only be
launched from within office!

However, trying to import the file in clip art gallery once launched
from office is impossible as it does not recognize it.

Can anyone confirm that they have been able to use this feature in
office 2008???

Help! I just purchased both Leopard and Office 2008 for Mac. The entire purpose was to create elementary education workbooks with clipart and the publishing upgrades of Word 2008. Does anyone have a company contact? I am under a strict deadline!

The company contact is in the phone book. I wouldn't waste your time.

Search this group for "clipart". There are several good explanations for
how to get it working.

the solutions presented here don't really work...

on my PC Office 07 I can just "insert">clipart and look for online
clipart within the insert clipart window, no need to get online and
download anything... won't Office 08 for Mac have this feature also?

i mean it is SO annoying to have to download files one by one and then
find out they don't work actually...

The solutions presented here all work for the people who present them. Are
you suggesting that you are not as clever as them? :)

Mac Office 2008 does not have its own "Downloadable Clipart" feature.
There's clipart on the installation disk.

If you use Insert>Picture>Clipart, it opens the Clipart Gallery. If you
click Online there, it takes you to the same Clipart download as Word 2007
uses.

If you follow the suggestions in here, you will be able to download them,
and they will actually work.

What happened when you tried it?

Unless you give your version information, the only answer we can give you is
"Don't know".

So am I correct in thinking that we are simply unable to use any wmf file?

Sir,

i'm sure you mean well, and I appreciate that you're taking the time
to check this thread, but the solutions posted here so far do not work
for me. Clip gallery launches, the files download into .cil archives,
and double-clicking those archives does nothing. At best it does
nothing, at worst it crashes Clip Gallery, and one has to start again
from the insert->picture->clipart->online. It's a circle that goes
nowhere.

Am i to understand from your post that there are people using Office
for Mac 08 and who are able to use the Clip Gallery program from
within Word and who are able to download .cil files from the MS
website and insert them into documents? In a way, I'd like to know
that I'm the exception, that the program actually works, but I'm not
sure that people are all talking about the same thing. once again, I'm
interested in Office for Mac 08 (including Clip Gallery 12.0.0), using
the current version of Leopard (10.5.2).

Hi Rory,
Thank you for reporting this information. There have a been a variety of
issues reported about importing online clip art into the Clip Gallery. This
doesn't appear to be specific to getting to the Clip Gallery from Word
(i.e., see the thread at:
http://www.officeformac.com/ProductForums/PowerPoint/482). We have been
actively investigating a database corruption issue that can occur. Sorry
for any inconvenience.

I believe I have tried every solution offered here with no success. I am working on a PowerBook G4 in Leopard (10.5.20) Powerpoint 2008, with Safari 3.1.1. as my browser. When I try to import a piece of clipart from the MS site it downloads but trying to move the download into the gallery (by clicking on the download) causes the gallery to close. Occasionally it will tell me that it can't load the particular file type, but not always. About one time in 25 it works. Sometimes i can't even get art in the gallery to insert to my slide.

Based on feedback here, I deleted the suggested preferences, repaired permissions and added all available updates for both Leopard and MS 2008. When I couple this with Entourage's syncing problems, I may well be better of returning to 2004. Any help would be much appreciated. Laurie
