Word 2008 quits in outline mode

Kirk Krekeler

I am trying to create a document in Word for Mac 2008 in outline mode and
every time I promote or demote a heading, the document crashes. By crash, I
mean Word quits and then attempts to recover the document (from last save).
I've tried working with this outline in Draft, Outline, and Layout mode but
it crashes in all three. Anyone have a suggestion?

Hi Kirk:

Yes: That symptom is diagnostic: The numbering List applied to the Heading
styles is corrupt.

To fix it:

1) Quit Word.

2) Find and Delete your Normal.dotm (the problem may have been saved to the
Normal template. If it has, every document you create will have the
problem).

3) Create a new blank document and save it with a file name

4) Open the bad document

5) Copy the entire content

6) Open the new document and use Edit>Paste Special>Plain Text to paste the
content into the new document.

Be careful at that step: if you use any Paste method other than "Plain Text"
you will paste the problem into the new document and get to start again from
Step 1...

7) Now use Outline View to re-apply your outline: Select all the text and
Apply Heading 1, then use Demote to adjust the subordinate headings.

Hope this helps
