Word 2008 Spell Checker Crashes Program

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

When I run the spell checker on any document, the checker begins to run but only to crash the program. Is there any fix for this? This is becoming very irritating with larger documents.

You haven't given your update level for Word: Make sure it is fully
updated.
