Word 2008 to PC 2007 .docx

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I have created a new Publishing Layout document on my mac that I am running office 2008 and saved it as a .docx. Now when I try to open this document on a PC running Vista (SP2) and Word 2007 the document opens the first page and shows it as it should be but the other pages do not display correctly, all it shows is a white page where the other pages should be, (but these pages look not full length just a small fraction of the size of a page). I have also tried to save the document as a .doc file and still I get the same issue. Any help would be appreciated.

Publishing Layout is one feature the Mac version has which the Windows
version does not. You may have better luck importing the file to Publisher.

Thank you so much for the fast response! That is such a shame as I am actually doing something for my daughters preschool to help them out. Do you know if there is any chance they will be adding this feature to PC version?

Hi,

Although Publishing Layout view does not exist in Word for Windows, the
document itself should display and print correctly in Word 2007. The
ingredients of a Word document created in Page Layout view are no
different from other views.

That said, I think the most likely solution is for you to be certain
that your copy of Word is up to date. On the Word menu choose About
Word. Your Mac version of Word should be Version 12.2.0 (090605) or
higher. Latest installed update should be 12.2.1 or higher.

The other half of the equation is to make sure that the Windows
computer's version of Office is up to date. On the Windows machine click
the Start button and then choose Windows Update. Be sure that the option
is checked to update all Microsoft products and then run Windows update.

I would be surprised (but not completely shocked) if your document did
not display correctly in Windows if both the Mac and PC versions of Word
are up to date.

Please make sure that both versions are up to date. Please post back
whether updating fixes or does not fix this problem for you, as others
may encounter the same or a similar problem and would love to hear from
you. If the problem persists, there are other things we can suggest to
try, but this is far and away the most likely cure.

Hi Jim,
Thanks again for your response, you guys are great. OK I have checked both machines the Mac is at 12.2.1 and the PC updates are fully up to date too so it appears that the versions are not the problem, perhaps this is a larger problem. The document in question is not private and I am willing to send you a copy to try from your end if you would like to see for yourself.
Thanks,
Craig

Received it, Craig & so far have confirmed that the file does indeed not
agree with Word 2007. It appears exactly as you describe, but I haven't had
an opportunity to dissect it yet. Will let you know if I can come up with an
explanation or a fix.

Well, asking us if we "know" something is asking for an absolute, and there
are few of those in life. I "know" my car will start tomorrow... Ummm....
I hope :)

However, in this case, Publishing View was implemented in Macintosh Word to
make up for the fact that Microsoft Publisher is not available for the Mac.

However, Microsoft Publisher is available for the PC.

So what I "know" is that it is unlikely that a large American corporation
will ever add a feature to one product that would diminish the sales of
another of its products, if you take my point :)

Cheers

Hi Craig;

I'm afraid I don't have good news :-( I've run this by Word 2007 in various
ways with essentially the same result each time.

My interpretation is that the problem most likely stems from the complex
structure of the document. Nothing you've done, but simply the manner in
which Pub Layout functions. The combination of Page Breaks & Odd/Even
Masters combined with the fact that each page is effectively based on a
separate instance of the corresponding Master generates a very alien set of
circumstances. Word 2007 doesn't comprehend the matter of Masters in the
first place & as a result appears to be choking on that complexity.

Because of 2007's inability to make heads or tales of the content beyond the
first page it is unable to render anything meaningful at all. I believe that
the odd/even replication is a major contributor since Word can't handle
multiple sets without Section Breaks... which aren't there. Consequently I
can't even access those 'pieces' to do anything with them. I've tried a
number of thing's including deleting page breaks in Draft View with no
improvement whatsoever.

I intend to send a copy to 2 others who have more sophisticated means than I
of analyzing the situation. I don't know that anything will come of it but
I'll post back with any response I receive.
