Word 2008: unable to insert image once document is saved

D

I know at least one other person reported this, but the proposed
workaround isn't working around. I'm running Word 2008 with SP2 and
once I've saved my document, if I try to insert an image using the
Insert Picture command, I get an error message saying that the image
format is not recognized by Word. This happens whether the image is a
PNG, JPG, TIFF, etc. If I drag the image into place, it's fine, but
then my PC colleagues can't see the image (the image has to be
inserted using the command). Interestingly, if I create a new document
that has not yet been saved as a .doc file, I can insert any image to
my heart's content. I tried closing the formatting pallette, but that
didn't solve the problem. I also tried saving as a .docx, but once the
document has been saved in any format, it can't accept images except
by dragging them into place. This wouldn't be so bad if Windows-based
computers could see the images I've inserted by dragging, but they
often can't.

Suggestions? Thanks!

Sorry David , but there is no "SP2" for Office 2008. If you state exactly
what your current version is perhaps someone can offer suggestions.

The problem was corrected (for most anyway) by SP1 (12.1.0) & I've not seen
any backlash resulting from the 12.1.1 update. Have you repaired disk
permissions & restarted since applying whatever update you last installed?

It's possible you have a similar but different situation, so give complete
details re Office & OS X versions and type of Mac. It would also help if
you'd clarify the points about differing file types (.doc/.docx) & saved v.
unsaved documents.

I did install both updates (sorry if i used the wrong term for the
last update, but just accept that I'm running the latest and greatest,
have restarted, rebuilt permissions, etc, not that any of those
shouldhave any effect IMHO)

But the problem remains. What now?

CyberTaz,

Our company is having the exact same problem. We do quite a bit of graphic
use in our business and we first noticed this problem about 3 weeks ago AFTER
a Mac OS update. We are currently running 10.5.4 (9E17). I know for a fact
that this was not an issue 1 month ago - but it is now.

I haven't found a good workaround yet; and frankly I am a bit amazed that I
don't see more people in the Mac forum complaining about this MS bug.

Hello Fooster -

Not being defensive, but if all worked fine before the OS X update I'm not
sure how it qualifies as a "MS bug". Especially since, - as you noted -
there doesn't seem to be any indication of other users having a similar
experience. I for one have no such difficulty on either of my installations
of Office 2008. I'm inclined to believe it's something of a more local
nature :)

The first step I'd suggest is to d/l & apply the 10.5.4 COMBO updater from
the Apple site: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/

It's more complete than the version you get from Software Update and the
Combo often "fixes" what the SU version "breaks" :)

Also, make sure that Office is fully updated to 12.1.1 & repair permissions.

If that doesn't correct the problem there must be some other conflict that
needs to be resolved. In that case, post a new message - not a reply -
giving all particulars specific to you situation & systems. There may be a
3rd party utility involved or some other issue interfering with the process.

You wouldn't be using CMYK images, by any chance?

Microsoft Office sometimes has problems with colour depths above RGB.

Hope this helps

I'm having the exact same problem as the original poster. MacBook Pro
purchased three months ago running Mac OX 10.5.4 with all the
component updates (QT, security, whatnot). All Mac OS updates were
installed from a combo installer. Office 2008 v12.1.2 installed.

Have you repaired permissions since installing updates?

If that alone doesn't resolve the matter please submit a NEW message. The
*symptoms* may be similar but that doesn't mean it's the same problem - the
"OP" was using a different build of both the OS & Office. You need to state
your particulars, including what type of images & how you're inserting them.
