Word 2008 using most of the available memory

F

Francisco

Hi,

I don't know whether this has already been discussed, after a quick look at the forum I haven't found any related topic.

M y problem is that every time I open a Word (2003/2004) document, the program starts using memory and never releases it until the apllication crashes.

The kind of documents I open average 3 to 4 MB docs ... none of them being docx files because I need to share them with other colleagues who use 2003, 2004.

Any idea on how to solve it ?

Many Thanks,
Francisco
PS: I have 2GB of ram on my intel macbook.

Hello Francisco -

I'm afraid you don't supply enough detail about the docs to be certain but
the first 2 things I'd suspect are a) corrupt documents and/or b) some sort
of automated elements that Word 2008 can't handle (perhaps VBA, broken
links, corrupt tables, Versions, etc.).

Try the troubleshooting procedures here under the topic "Unexpected quit
while in use" & come back with your results:

Thanks Bob,

I will have a go and see whether this fixes the problem. I may also try some of the other fixes supplied on the site.

In any case I will get back with some feedback on the things I would have tried.

Many Thanks,
Francisco

Bob, Francisco is not alone: please see the "Memory Leak in Office 2008?"
discussion thread in the microsoft.public.mac.office newsgroup or at

I was sorely disappointed when the Combo OS 10.5.2 updater (PowerPC version)
did not stop the memory leak--which I have now narrowed to Word 2008.
(Maybe it does not happen with the Intel version of OS 10.5.x, but it's been
an issue on my G5 since upgrading from Office 2004 to 2008.)

Dare I hope that an Office 2008 patch could fix this issue?

Respectfully, Norm

Hi Francisco/Norman:

We knew there was a memory leak in Entourage. Apple update 10.5.2 should
have fixed that one.

Francisco, are you also on a PowerPC processor, as is Norman?

I'll copy Curt Laird on this response. Curt is the Microsoft Development
Engineer in Test responsible for Word issues. We'll see what he says.

Hi all,
Something that would help confirm that it is indeed a Word problem is to run
Activity Monitor (in Applications:Utilities) and filter on memory usage.
Word's memory usage should climb at launch and then level off. It may grow
more after that depending upon what you're doing.

If this is dependent on certain documents please send those to me. My email
is below. I'd like to get a dump from Activity Monitor also (text format).

Be sure to follow John's advice and go through the diagnostic procedures he
provided a link for (Thanks John!)

I have also forwarded this onto the Compatibility Mode feature owner for
advice. I'll let you know what we find out.

Sorry for the trouble.

Curt
