Word 2008 Window in dual-monitor setup(Spaces turned off) resizes unexpectedly

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

After not being able to deal with the incompatibilities of Word 2008 and Spaces, it was decided to turn Spaces off. However, I am still experiencing unexpected resizing of word document windows in my dual-monitor setup (MacBook Pro connected to an external monitor). My Word document windows are randomly resized to a tall and narrow layout.

What can I do to prevent this from happening? It is benign, but annoying after a while.

Are you fully up to date?? I had the same problem with early versions of
Office 2008, but I haven't seen it after updating.
You should be in 12.1.2,

Thank you for your help again Corentin,

Yes, I am fully updated to 12.1.2.

I am just disappointed that Word 2008 is the least reliable version to date. Perhaps I will consider downgrading to Word 2004.

I also see this behavior on 12.1.2. It makes me crazy. In order to avoid, I always use word windows on the monitor that is set up to have main apple menu drop downs at the top of the screen. I've reconfigured my dual screen setup so that the top menu is on the larger monitor that I use to edit word docs. However, this does not help if you like to have an open doc on each monitor. Also, this resize behavior seems to occur when you minimize an different application window or open another application window from the dock. So I avoid minimizing or expanding apps from the dock when editing on two monitors.

I want to chime in to note that I am also seeing this behavior. I'm running Word 12.1.12 and OS X 10.5.5, and my open windows will get randomly resized to be tall and narrow if they are open on my second monitor. As has been noted, it's non-destructive, but extremely annoying. It consistently happens when another application's window is minimized to the dock (as noted by Paul A. above), but also seems to happen sporadically at other times.

Hi Paul:

Sorry: I guess someone should have mentioned -- it is most unlikely that
this bug will ever be fixed.

It would require an architectural change to the entire display mechanism in
Word, and that's just not going to happen.

Maybe it will be fixed in the next version of Word (2010), but I would not
expect it before then.

I hope I am wrong, but I doubt it :)

still not fixed in 12.1.3. :-(

I hadn't heard of a change having been made to the display mechanism for
Word 2008, John -- but may have missed that, since I have not "up"graded to
Word 2008. Since it isn't a problem in Word 2004, I'm curious about the
change.

Cheers

Hi Clive:

Yeah, the display mechanism is the main change in Word 2008.

Install it and have a look. :)

Cheers
