Word 2011 and Text Boxes

I am using Mac OS X 10.6
When I copy a graphic from a PDF and insert it into my document in
Word
2011 and then want to use a text box to replace Japanese in the
graphic with English, the graphic disappears. Apparently, Word uses
layers for graphics and text boxes. Can anyone tell me how to merge
the
layers so that the graphic and the text box are both visible but so
that the text box covers the portion I want covered?
