Word 2k3: Tablet PC input panel not working

Hi, all! Using Office Pro 2k3 (11.5604.5606) on Tablet PCs (Gateway E295C
running XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 Version 2002 SP2). This same issue is on
two different tablet PCs: one with all the latest updates and user software
installed, one fresh out of the box with ONLY Office Pro 2k3 installed.
Both are brand new and haven't even left the IT office yet. :)

In a nutshell, the tablet input panel won't insert text into a Word document
using handwriting recognition. The input panel DOES work in virtually every
other application I've tried, including OneNote, Excel, notepad,
WordPerfect, etc. It's just in Word that is doesn't work. Searched
Knowledge Base & Google, no answers found.

Some documents in the KB suggested making changes via "Text Services" applet
in Control Panel. This applet doesn't exist on any of the Tablet PCs I've
cracked open.

Also, KB articles refer to enabling "Handwriting" and the "Alternate User
Inputs" section of a customized Office setup; however, the "Handwriting"
isn't an option in the Advanced Setup of Office, only Speech is there. I've
also checked Word's configuration to see if there are any items Disabled
(none are) and if it's using a non-default normal.dot (it's not).

Is there something obvious that I'm missing here? Something that has to be
turned on in Word for handwriting to be activated, or a custom patch for
Word/Office that has to be installed that's only available by calling
Microsoft???

Help!! :) Any suggestions welcome at this point.

Follow-up: I uninstalled Office 2003 Pro and installed Office XP Pro.
Exact same problem: input panel won't insert handwritten text into Word XP,
but works perfectly in all other apps (including Outlook, OneNote 2k7,
WordPerfect, notepad, etc).

Anyone have any thoughts?
