Word 5.1 and older Macs

Jim Schoenberger

Howdy,

My neighbor has an older Mac, I think it is a 631CD, running OS 8.0. I
gave him my Word 5.1a diskettes but we cannot install the software. At
the very end, there is a message that a disk error has prevented
installation. He has sufficient room and the disk passes Norton's disk
utility. Any and all ideas will be appreciated! Thanks,

jas

Hello Jim,

Word 5.1a <nostalgic sigh> -- that's going back a long way!

It seems quite likely that there is something wrong with the diskettes --
possibly the last one.

Otherwise, there is no reason why Word 5.1a won't install in OS 8 -- it's
not until OS 9 that incompatibility problems start.

Keep coming back for a while, though; someone else may have more encouraging
information.

for you to back up your Normal template and all your Word settings files?
(This should be on a medium other than the internal hard drive and, if you
also want to protect against theft and fire, stored in a different
building.)

See if you can copy the disk on another computer, then re-write the contents
to a new floppy. It may simply be that the diskette itself is a bit old and
tired, and while his machine can't read it, another may be able to.
