Katrin,

First, I'm not sure MS Word 5 for the Mac (and I do hope you mean Word
5.1a) can open a Windows Word 2002 document straight away.

What Mac operating system are you using?

Are you trying to open the file by double clicking on it? If so, it won't
work. Launch MS Word first, then use File > Open and navigate to find the
file on your hard drive, and try opening it from within Word.

Lastly, make sure you have the actual Word 2002 file and not just an
'alias' to it (called a "Shortcut" in the Windows world). Look at the file
size (Command + I), if it's ridiculously small (like 10 or 20 K) then it's
just an alias (shortcut).

Hello Katrin,

I'm almost certain (from memory) that the current Windows operating systems
cannot open Word 5.1 (Mac) files, because the file format is incompatible
with Windows files (on the Mac, there are file converters).

If you still have Word 5.1 available on your Mac, the easiest way would be
to save the document (in Word 5.1) as a Rich Text Format (RTF) file. Then
add ".rtf" after the file title. If there is any problem in opening the rtf
file on the PC by double-clicking, go into Word 2002 and open it from the
File menu.

If you no longer have Word 5.1 available on your Mac, try the option of
"Recover text from any file" (on the File menu -> Open -> "Show" pop-down
menu). There will be a lot of unwanted formatting characters but you should
be able to rescue the document in plain text from and re-format it.

Remember to restore the setting on the "Show" pop-down menu to the one you
usually have (probably "All Word documents"), because this menu's options
are "sticky" and you will get a fright the next time you use it to open a
normal Word document!
