Word 6 GPF when adding endnotes

Two years ago I moved my Word 6 program from a Micron
Pentium 90 Win 3.1 computer to a Dell Pentium II Win98SE
machine. Word 6 worked fine until I recently created a
10-page document with lots of endnotes. Then I started
getting General Protection Fault messages immediately upon
opening the document with manditory close-out. Does anybody
know how to fix the problem? Many thanks.

P.S. If there's no cure, is their an upgraded MS word
program that works about the same as Word 6?

Stretching the mind back so many generations is difficult but IIRC it is
either a corrupt normal.dot or corrupt winword.opt file. Renaming either
should resolve the problem.
