Word 97 and 2002 Picture Linking Problems

Pat Conover

Hi, I am having a problem with Word 97 and Word 2002/XP and linking jpg
pictures in Word documents. The first computer is an XP machine with Word
97 SR2 and a second F: HD where I save my jpg photos in F:\Image. The
second computer is also an XP machine with Word 2002/XP all updates. Before
upgrading the second machine to Word 2002/XP (both were Word 97), I would
use paste special>insert>link to file the jpg's. The second computer was
mapped to the first computers shared F: drive and the picture links worked
great on both machines.

Now with Word 2002/XP on the second machine, even set to save as Word 97
compatible, the photos that are linked are often lost on one or both
machines, with invalid switch, invalid link or cannot be displayed messages.
The base documents were all made using Word 97. This is really frustrating
and time consuming. Any help appreciated. I will also look through the
group for some answers.

Thanks, Pat

Hi Pat,

Is the problem with new links/files, old links/files or both?

For the links to work, the paths to the source files need to be exactly the same on both PCs. So, if the mapping has changed, that
would be enough to break the links.

If you can organise things so the the pictures can go in a file the at least the same relative paths on both machines, the approach
outlined here:
http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showthreaded.pl?Number=670027
may help.

Cheers

Thanks for the information. Yes, I think its a path problem, that for
10-years never reared its ugly head! From my Word 97 and 2002/XP machine I
put linked photos in and the path looks like.

INCLUDEPICTURE "F:\\ImageC07\\100_3959.JPG" \* MERGEFORMAT \d

But after I save the file on my 2002/XP machine to the Word 97 F drive the
path changes to

INCLUDEPICTURE "../../ImageC07/100_3959.JPG" \* MERGEFORMATINET \d

Why? I have no idea. Word 97 always just used the F:\\folder\\image.jpg
format, which worked great like I said for 10-years. All my photos are in
F:\ImageC07 folder and my Word files in F:\Word Docs 2007 folder. I need to
read your post. Any suggestions are welcome!

Thanks, Pat Conover

Macropod,

I just noticed after reviewing my own post that the Mergeformat command
changes to INET at the end, which I assume means an internet location not a
local drive. These are new test files I just created to check various
settings, but yes it also happens with my Old files, which I really don't
want to mess up!

I thought I was safe by using the mapped F drive, with only one folder for
my photos, i.e. F:\ImageC07. I even used eight letters/numbers ala DOS days
so no long file names, etc. Again thanks for your help. Relative paths are
killing me!

Hi Macropod,

I tried your method, but when I click on "Save," the string you
proposed:

{INCLUDEPICTURE "{FILENAME\p}/../Image.png"}

....automatically changes to:

{INCLUDEPICTURE "01.png"\*MERGEFORMAT}

This inhibits me from taking advantage of the "relative" links as you
had mentioned on your website "Relative Paths in Word Fields."
Therefore, the image doesn't get updated as the image changes or is
shifted to a different directory with the word file.

Please adivise.

Thanks,

Sho

Hi Sho,

Are you sure you've typed everything correctly? There is no way I can see that Word could change the filename as indicated in your
post. Neither does it arbitrarily add the \* MERGEFORMAT switch.

The field coding works correctly on all versions from Word 97 through to Word 2007. Is your copy of Word fully patched and up to
date?

Cheers

PS: I have had 1 report of a problem with Word 2002 SP3.

The macro I posted at the same location shows how you can overcome that.
