Word 97 and Text Form Field

I entered a "text form field" within a table and saved as word 97-2000 & 6.0/95 rtf; when I re-opend the document, the text form field expanded into two lines! How can I correct this? Tried just about everything! I had to save it to word 6.0/95 doc and it is fine. Why is that?
