Word 97 application file has encountered a problem message

Dear folks,

I have office 97 and windows XP home version. One day
when I tried to open Word I got the message theat the
application file has encountered a problem and needs to
close. I have uninstalled and reinstalled but no luck.
Any suggestions? I have both service packs installed.

Also just wondering if there is any problem purchasing
the 2002 version of word and installing it separately if
this does not improve.
