Word 97 checks internet for something

I had a Word 97 document which used to open quickly (about 2.5 Mb in size).
It was opened by Word 2003 and now whenever I open back in WEord 97 as
couple of odd and annoying things happen:

* The document takes AGES to open
* The internet connection goes to nearly 100% for a few seconds
* Finally the document opens and calmly displays itself

What is going on with the internet? How do I stop Word trying to access
something on the internet? What is looking for anyway?

I don't want my application looking for anything on the internet without my
specifically asking it to.
