Word 97 doc saved as plain text by Word X

Ross Robinson

I e-mailed a Word 97 document home, worked on it over the
weekend on my Mac using Word X, and then e-mailed it
back. It displayed fine on my Mac all weekend; however,
when I opened it this morning at work using Word 97, it
appears to be a plain text document. What did I do wrong
and how can I avoid this in the future?

Hi Ross,

I'm not a Windows person so this may be off the mark but ...

Are you double-clicking to open the document in Word 97? Try opening it via
File> Open and make sure the open dialog is set to open "All Word Documents"
(not RTF or Recover Text From Any File). I know this can make a difference
in MacWord; I don't know if it does in WinWord but it's worth a try.

Hi Beth:

Yep, it's Recover Text From Any File that he is seeing, exactly the same as
on the Mac (Windows is actually far more likely to do this, particularly
with a dinosaur like Word 97, which should have been euthanased at
birth...).

In this user's case, his Windows file associations have probably been hosed.
He should try right-clicking the file in My Computer and looking to see if
the "Open With" option appears. If it doesn't, he does not have sufficient
system access to fix this and he will have to call the Help Desk.

If he gets the option, he needs to select Word 97 and check the box that
says "Always use this program".

Cheers

Hi,
I have encountered a similar problem. I emailed a Word document from a
Windows PC to my Mac. Then when I sent it back, I wasn't able to
reopen it in Windows. I'm sure there must be a solution to this.
Thanks,
Gabriela

Hi Gabriella:

I just answered the question in my answer to your other post. You do NOT
have the same problem :)
