Word 97 doc won't open in Word XP SP3

I have a 199 page Word 97 document. It contains graphics and tables and looks
like it was originally built from a template. The problem I have encountered
is that we are on Wrod XP now and I can't get this document to open in Word
XP. I keep getting the following error. The document "[Doc name]" caused a
serious error last time it was opened. Would you like to continue opening.
If you say yes it comes up with Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and
needs to close.
Error Signature is

Offset: 0000300e

I can open this document fine in Word 97 but I don't want to have to install
Word 97 on everyones machines to open this doc.
I need some help on converting this to Word XP.
