word 97 docs open in word 2007

I have documents that are all saved in Word 97 - 2003 files on an XP
computer, I just bought Win 7 computer and now have Word2007 I am unable to
open these files. It starts with a conversion file and then brings up a page
with strange characters only. Or will not open the file at all. As well,
Works file spreadsheet will open but the regular Works file will not open at
all
