word 97 does not start

AJS

Hello,
I am using Office Professional 97 SR 2 on with Windows 98 SE. Today I
created a new normal.dot template by saving it under a "normal2.dot". I then
went into the office template folder and renamed "normal.dot" to
"normal1.dot" and renamed the newly created template to "normal.dot". When I
then tried opening word from a shortcut icon the computer froze. I then
uninstalled office 97 completely (I even used the uninstall utility provided
by Microsoft KB) and reinstalled Office 97.
Now I can not open word from the Office toolbar nor by going through
"start-programs-word". When I do that the computer freezes. I am able to
open an existing word document and then go to "New".
How will I be able to use the word icon on the office toolbar? Also, the
other programs like PowerPoint or excel open just fine.
Please help.
Thank you,
AJS

You should allow Word to create a new Normal.dot for you.

When you create a document/template and save it as Normal.dot it isn't
the same Normal.dot Word creates. You'll find the built-in AutoText
entries missing and in later versions of Word, AutoCorrect entries do
not appear correctly.

It also sounds like you may have more than one Normal.dot available to
Word. Use Windows Search and find all files named Normal.dot and
rename them to OldNormal.dot. Word will create a new one upon
starting.

If this resolves the problem, any customizations can be copied to the
new Normal.dot via the Organizer (Tools/Templates and Add-Ins) Once
this is complete OldNormal.dot can be discarded.

Thank you for your reply, as I said, I totally uninstalled Office (using the
uninstall utility privided by Microsoft) then reinstalled everything. So
the existing Normel.dot was created by Word.
There is only one "Normal.dot", and when I click on it Word opens fine.
However I want to be able to open Word by clicking on a shortcut or on the
Office toolbar.
Thank you,
AJS

When you uninstall/reinstall Word a new Normal.dot is not
automatically created. Your personal settings will be preserved.

Did you try searching for all occurrences of Normal.dot as I
suggested?

Thanks for your prompt reply.
After I uninstalled, I did deleted:
Normal.dot
Custom.dic
*.xlb
Personal.xls
Blank.pot
*.pst
*.pab
*.acl except Mso97.acl
And any personal templates that might be in the Templates folder.

In Windows Explorer, I deleted the following folders
x:\Program Files\Microsoft Office
x:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Vba
x:\Program Files\Common Files\ODBC
x:\Windows\Temp\Vbe

I did try your suggestion. Only one Normal.dot was found. I renamed it and
tried to start Word. Again, the computer froze.
Please help.
Thanks,
AJS

It could be caused by some corruption in the Word\Data key in the
Registry.

In the Registry navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Word\Data

and rename the Data key to OldData. Word will create a new one upon
starting.

As always, prior to making any changes to the Registry you should
review "Backing up the Registry" and "Restoring the Registry" in the
Registry Help.

In this situation you may want to use the Registry/Export Registry
file command, export your selected branch, and delete the key. That
way if you find the change wasn't necessary or incorrect, you can
merge the deleted branch back to the Registry by double-clicking the
resulting file.
