Word 97 formatting errors

Mike Goodson

Hi,

I have a user here running Windows NT4 and Office 97 (with all OS and
applications service packs). She has developed a Word problems where by some
documents have lost their formatting. By formatting I mean bullet points no
longer there, the font changing to Times New Roman, losing charts etc. I
have removed (using the Office removal tool) and re-installed Office and
have deleted and re-created normal.dot. Does anyone have any ideas please? I
have seen on Google that I may need to check the graphics driver which I
will do but can't see how this can be the problem as surely it would affect
all documents?

Thanks in advance
Mike

Thanks for this, after checking your MVP link, this is exactly what is
happening. I have not been able to check the users PC but I suspect that
when I deleted and re-created the normal.dot file the other day, File > Open
reverted to Word Docs.

Two questions:
One = If the file has been saved in the "funny state" is there any way to
get the formatting back?
Two = The user is the only user of the PC, so how can this happen?

Many thanks,

Mike

No, if she ignored the warning about saving in text format, it will have to
be reformatted from scratch.

Unfortunately, if the user has opened in the Recover mode and saved the
document, the formatting is totally lost. This setting is sticky in Word97,
but in late versions the setting returns back to documents.
