Word 97 Freezes on opening.

S

stayatavilla.com

I am running Office Professional Edition 97 on Windows 98.
I have been using Word without problems for some years. I
recently deleted some programs I no longer use. Since then
Word has been freezing as it starts to open, and I get a
message saying that the system is running dangerously low
on resources and requesting that I shut down some
programs, including word.

I tried reinstalling Office 97, and also Windows 98, but
this hasn't resolved the problem. Excel runs without
problems - it just seems to be MS Word.

Anybody got a solution to this one?

I have visited this site and set all *.dot files to *.old
(except Normal.dot - having deleted duplicates of
Normal.dot). I have deleted the Data Key and have
unchecked the Outlook Journal Microsoft Word checkbox in
the "Also record files from" box.

I have deleted the registry values, i.e.
\\HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0
\Word\Data

I don't have Norton Antivirus, have Acrobate ver 3.0 (not
ver 5.0), don't have WinFax PRO; so nothing to be done
there.

The problems still exists!

On trying to open Word, I click on the toolbar shortcut
and the MS Word Panel shows up, then the start of the main
Word page but without any data or icons as it then freezes
still.

Any other thoughts?

I tried all that was posted on
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm
but without success.

Have deleted additional Normal.dot files, changed all
other *.dot files to *.old, deleted potentially corrupt
registry, reset MS Outlook etc. but Word still freezes on
start up with a message that there is insufficient memory.

Any further ideas?

The following is a list of the actions I have taken: [end
result was successful].
1. I only have one Normal.dot
2. I have a ~$Normal.dot. This file is "faded", I have
tried deleting it, but whenever I try to start Windows it
returns. It is located at c:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Templates
3. I have deleted the Data file in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER|Software\Microsoft\Office\8.0\Word\Data
4. I have gone into Outlook and taken the ticks out of all
boxes in "Automatically record these items: & Also record
files from: This whole area has blank boxes only.
5. I have moved the following files from the Startup
Path "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\STARTUP" :-
Email.dot
Flame.dot
Hightech.dot
Html.dot
Midight.dot
Ocean.dot
Rain.dot
Urgent.dot
into a new file I created in c:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\Dol NOT dot

5. I am running an IBM 4029 laser printer directly
connected to my system - I am not on a network.
6. I am not running Norton AntiVirus or Norton SystemWorks
7 I have Adobe Acrobat version 3.0.000
8. I have not got WinFax

9. I tried changing Normal.dot to Normal.old then tried
starting Word - and Word was successful! I still have the
Normal.old which I presume I should delete. I had checked
for viruses but the check came back with a negative result
(McAffee on line from AOL) so unless it is an unidentified
virus can only think that the file was corupt in some way.
Should I delete this old file or do you have any other
suggestions. Having uninstalled and reinstalled Office 97
why would this file cause a problem?

I have some while ago scanned an image within an OCR scan
of a domument. This image seems to have triggered a macro
of some sort to run within that document. Could this have
in any way effected the Normal.dot file?

Thanks for all your help - just would like to feel that
this won't come back again, though I think I now have the
means to fix it.

Okay, it would appear that your Normal.dot may be corrupt. The ~$Normal.dot
file is normal; it's the "owner" file that Word creates when you open any
template or document (for more, see "WD: How Word for Windows Uses Temporary
Files" at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632).

As for what to do now, you have already taken care of the (possibly) corrupt
Normal.dot by renaming it. The new one that Word has created is a
factory-default copy. If you have any customizations that you want to
retrieve from your old Normal.dot (macros, AutoText, styles, custom
toolbars), you can do this using the Organizer (Tools | Templates and
Add-ins: Organizer); you will not be able to retrieve keyboard shortcuts or
customizations to the built-in toolbars, unfortunately.

Then this indicates that the problem is with Normal.dot, the Registry, or an
add-in. Go back and work through the exercises in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm to eliminate these
possibilities one by one.

Thanks. Think I will just delete the Normal.old file and
just set the new file up as I go. If I need it, I'll put
it in. Often "Least is Best". Think we can close this one
now. Many thanks again. DB.

I think this is a wise approach. It doesn't hurt to clear out the deadwood
from time to time, which is why I usually start with a fresh Normal.dot
every time I get a new computer with a new version of Word. It takes a while
to customize it to my requirements, but if I don't miss some customization I
had before, then I probably don't need it, and I discover new features in
the process.
