Word 97 hangs after 30 secs.

Have Office 97 in laptop working fine for about a year. Now, about 20-30 seconds after starting Word, an error message comes up saying the program will be shut down. This is without typing or touching anything.. Excel works fine, just Word.. ????

Further info, W2K os. I uninstalled Office 97, and re-installed. Same problem.. Also once had this same type of problem with a photo editor.....
