Word 97 in Windows XP Home problems

I have a customers machine in which word 97 is installed on their current
windows XP Home edition operating system. The Problem I am having is...
When using word and watching the performance monitor when normal use of word
is done (ie: typing, copying and pasting, saving, printing) the page file and
CPU Usage monitors skyrocket and the available memory plummets and the
winword.exe application uses over 130 MB of RAM and the page file is almost
to 2 gigs and cpu usage stays maxed out. Everything you try to do on the
computer at that point becomes futile as all the memory is used up.

I have tried uninstalling completely all office and deleted all office
folders as they had a trial version of office 2003 before this was installed
and then running a registry cleaner to remove all unused keys. Reinstalled
Office 97 pro and still has the same problem. I know there were many macro
viruses out there. I have also tried the winword /r and winword /unregserver
then /regserver tricks with no luck.

I am thinking of suggesting an upgrade to office 2003 or open office but I
will need to have a reason why word 97 is messing up like this. I have tried
openoffice and it works great and is much newer and has more functions. Has
anyone run across this problem with Word using up all the system resources
before? Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you all!
