Word 97 in XP Professional

Ryan

We have new PC's running XP Pro, with office 97. When opening Word
documents from within Outlook they take approx 2-3 minutes to open.
Even if they are saved from the email to the local PC it still takes
the same amount of time. We've reinstalled Word, Office, XP Pro, and
it does the same thing. Deleted Normal.dot, application data for the
user, and still same result. any help would be appreciated...

Hi Ryan,

I would suggest saving the document to your system. Next, open it.
Wait... wait... wait... Ok, now with it open, navigate to Tools >
Templates & Addins. What template is attached? Is the attached
template pointed to a network drive or the local drive? If it is a
network drive, you are better off deleting it. Word will take its time
opening the document because it is looking for the source template and
it has to loop through all of your network connections before it says,
duh! Not there! Deleting the attached template will not harm your
document.

Hope this helps!

Normal.dot was attached to it so that didn't seem to be the problem.
It ended up being our Document System(DocsOpen). Of course it was
supposed to have no gliches according to them. I installed File
Monitor and tried opening the document again and it was referencing
over 50 .ini files in DocsOpen. That was the problem, we just deleted
the .ini files and it seems to work. Thanks for the help though

Hi Ryan

There might be a mixup with account rights. What status has the
account? If it is only with "USER" rights, this might be the cause.
Try it with putting it to "Poweruser".

Since W2000, Office and Windows work differently together, so if you
take something old like Office 97 and something new like WinXP, WinXP
does not let the program access some ressources slow or not at all...

Cheers
Peter
