Word 97 newspaper columns like WordPerfect 5.1

Years ago I used WP 5.1 and you could type your info and then press
(something like) Ctrl+Enter and it would make a new column break. But
when you did this again it would make the next column break at the
longest part of the previous (side by side) columns. E,g,: (example
below has been spaced using monospaced font in Notepad)

Is there a way to accomplish this (add-on/3rd party) without making
tables? I kinda like the idea of being able to do a keyboard command
like Ctrl-Enter to do this without "drawing" tables in Word.
Ideas anyone?

You could use a combination of columns and Continuous section breaks, but
this is really a situation that cries out for table.
