Word 97 on XP, problems saving

(This was originally posted in general qs, but I guess it should have been
here, sorry) - I have a new system with XP PRO SP2. I installed Office 97.
All seems fine except that word 97 seemed to crash upon saving, 50% of the
time. I tried switching the program to run under compatibility mode for 95
and then 98 - each gave me the same problem. I then installed Office 97
updates (SR1 and SR2b) hoping that would solve the problem.

Now it seems saving is more stable, however whenever I save a file, no
matter what I name it the resulting file's name only contains the first
letter, the rest has been ignored. This seems to apply to Excell docs as
well.

I have searched through Microsoft site for support and seem to have run out
of options. Any suggestions?
