Word 97 on XP. Virus? Being Thick? ;)

Hi,

I recently bought a new computer with Windows XP. I have
updated to Service Pack 2. I have the firewall up and
running, and a fully uptodate norton antivirus.

My old machine was running Windows 95 (yes laugh :p)

I installed windows 97 on the new machine and transferred
all my word files from the old computer to the new one.

I am currently having a few problems:

1)When i open up a document from Start->MyRecentDocuments
it will open word (almost always) and the document, and
then after a few seconds will say the file is already
being used by me, do i want to make a copy? This also
happens if i open up my documents under Start, locate the
file and double click on it. It DOESNT happen if i open
up Word, and use File, Open to open the file.

2)Documents with headers and footers that previewed AND
printed correctly now only preview correctly but DONT
print out right. The headers and footers are too high.
AFAIK, the page settings are the same.

Notes:
There is only one user. The computer is new and so are
the problems. I really really REALLY dont want to have to
do a recovery if i dont have to. The word is installed
from my Microsoft Office 97 Small Business Edition CD.

Thanks so much for all and any help.

For the file opening problem, disable the Office Plugin that comes with
Symantec/Norton AntiVirus. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820
"How to use Office programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in"
for more info.

For the printing problem, make sure you have installed the Windows XP
printer driver for your printer (not an older OEM printer driver that
came with your printer). You might want to check on your printer
manufacturer's website for an updated printer driver for your printer.
Windows XP generally requires a different printer drivers for a given
printer than older versions of Windows. If your printer is more than a
few years old and no longer supported by the manufacturer (like my
circa-1995 Okidata Okipage 6e laser printer), you might have to install
a driver for a different printer that your printer can emulate (in my
case, a HP LaserJet II).

There may be several interrelated problems here. For starters, if you have
Norton Anti Virus (the creation of the devil), open NAV and disable the
Office Plug-in option.

Then, follow the troubleshooting tips here:

Come back for more advice if you still have problems to resolve.
