Word 97 - Outline numbering changes when document is saved

This only happens on one paragraph in my document. When I
save the document it looks like this: -

4 HEADING

4.1 Paragraph containing text .....

When I open the document again it looks like this: -

4 HEADING

1.1 Paragraph containing text .....

If I view tracked changes on screen it appears to have
made a change from 4.1 to 1.1 unprompted. Then when I
accept the change the numbering reverts to 4.1.

Can anyone help please?

Hi John

First, check that your headings (especially 4.1) have the correct numbering
style applied (reapply Heading 2 or whatever), and that you haven't got
'Automatically update styles' checked in Tools > Templates and Add-ins. The
styles themselves need to be set up correctly - see

You don't say what version of Word, and there are many numbering surprises,
but the particular symptoms you describe remind me of a bug in Word 97 which
was connected with having Wingdings bullets in the document. That was fixed
by or before SR2 though.
