Word 97 Password

Hello, new here:

I have an old 97 word doc which I have the password for. Trying to remove the file but ,when I follow the instructions to remove the password via File, Info, Protect Document and finally Encrypt with Password, the password box is empty. If I hit ok and try and open it again I still get prompted for the PW.
Any thoughts on how to fix this? Thanks
