Word 97 Quits on startup Fix listed in KB830354 article

Microsoft word 97 quits when it is opened, with the
following message:-

WINWORD.EXE has generated errors and will be closed by
windows. You will need to restart the program. An error
log is being created.

I have installed the patch mentioned in the above article
and checked the version numbers of Winword.exe and
Wwintl32.dll and they are both 8.0.0.9315, as required.

The patch however has not fixed the problem.

Help would be appreciated.
