Word 97 sort failure

RonW

I am using Word 97 under XP.

When I try to sort a list, I get an error box that says "Microsoft Word
for Windows® 97 application file has encountered a problem and needs
to close" and "Please tell Microsoft about this problem." The module
associated with this error is winword.exe.

The error does not happen in Safe Mode.

Does anyone know of a solution besides checking for conflicts by
shutting off applications that start with XP? I've tried that.

Thanks,
RonW

See http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm. Ignore the
word "Opening" in the title, since the troubleshooting steps are applicable
to all sorts of problems.

Since Safe Mode stops the problem, the cause is probably either an add-in or
a registry problem. For the former, you should also read
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA011514521033.aspx.

Thanks, Jay. You were probably right. I uninstalled Office, cleared
every Office entry out of the registry I could find, and reinstalled
it. It works now. I do a lot of messing with this machine, so I guess
it's about time I followed my old rule of thumb: do a clean reinstall
of the OS and apps every 18 months.
